Private Mental Health Retreat in Chiang Mai

Residential recovery in northern Thailand. Maximum four clients on site. Every session led personally by a Certified Trauma and EMDR Specialist with 25+ years of experience. Not a hospital, not a group facility, not a wellness spa: a private retreat built around deep, individual work.

A retreat, not a facility

A residential mental health retreat is an immersive recovery setting where you live on site for a defined period and work intensively on the underlying patterns behind trauma, depression, anxiety or burnout, rather than managing symptoms through weekly appointments.

New Paradigm operates as a wellness retreat and recovery centre, not a medical facility. There are no wards, no rotating shifts of staff, no group therapy circles where you disclose in front of strangers. What replaces those things is direct, daily one-on-one work with the founder, in a private setting designed to lower your nervous system's guard so real change becomes possible.

The model is deliberately small. Maximum four clients on site at any time. That upper limit is why the programme can stay individually tailored, why the daily rhythm can absorb the pace your recovery actually needs, and why what happens here does not feel institutional.

Suitable for adults dealing with long-standing patterns

The retreat is designed for people whose difficulties have persisted long enough that weekly outpatient therapy has not moved them, or whose lives and roles do not allow the slow rhythm of once-a-week appointments over months or years.

Typical clients arrive with one or more of the following:

  • Trauma and PTSD, including single-incident and complex or developmental trauma
  • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) linked to prolonged childhood or relational trauma
  • Long-standing depression that has not responded to medication or standard talk therapy
  • Chronic anxiety, panic patterns, and trauma-driven anxiety
  • Burnout and nervous-system collapse from prolonged professional or caring roles
  • Sexual abuse recovery, both recent and long-buried
  • Complicated grief and loss

The retreat is not appropriate for acute psychiatric crisis, active suicidality that requires inpatient stabilisation, or active substance withdrawal. Those situations require medical care first. If your evaluation identifies any of these, we will say so and can point you toward appropriate pathways before revisiting the retreat option.

14 days on site, 12 weeks of follow-up

The core intensive is 14 days of residential work, followed by 12 weeks of structured online aftercare. Longer stays of 21 or 28 days are available where a slower pace or a more complex trauma history calls for it. Details are on the programme page.

Days are unhurried on purpose:

  • Mornings: One-on-one therapy sessions with Dirk. This is the primary work: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), CBT, NLP, and, where appropriate, RETR (Rapid Emotional Trauma Release), a targeted EMDR + NLP protocol.
  • Afternoons: Integration and body-based work. Yoga, meditation, martial arts, guided hikes in the surrounding hills, quiet time in the saltwater pool. This is not filler. The nervous system integrates what the morning session opened.
  • Evenings: Free. No mandatory group activity, no scheduled sharing circles.
  • Nutrition: Meals prepared on site by our chef, adjusted for allergies, dietary requirements and personal preferences.
  • Aftercare: 12 weeks of scheduled online follow-up sessions to consolidate the gains and prevent the classic "returned home and it slipped" pattern.

The pace is set to allow real depth without pushing a nervous system that arrives depleted. If you need three quiet days on arrival before your first session, that is what happens. If you are ready to start on day one, that is available too. The programme flexes around your state, not the other way around.

What we use and why

The primary therapeutic tool is EMDR, one of the most extensively researched trauma modalities and endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for the treatment of PTSD.

Around EMDR we integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for structured cognitive work, Neuro-Linguistic Programming for precise language and belief updates, somatic work for the body-based residues of trauma, and mindfulness-based practices grounded in Dirk's monastic training. The framework that organises all of this is the Eight Domain Approach, developed by New Paradigm over twenty-five years of practice: physical wellbeing, mental health, emotional balance, spiritual grounding, nutrition, social connection, personal accountability, and long-term resilience.

Where we publish outcome numbers, we mark them clearly as internal programme data. Recent examples are described on the RETR overview and in the retreat's clinical blog. Externally validated statistics on the modalities themselves are drawn from published research and are cited on the modality pages.

Chiang Mai, northern Thailand

The retreat sits in Hang Dong, about 20 minutes south of Chiang Mai city, surrounded by rice fields and low mountains. Chiang Mai is Thailand's second city: calm, walkable, long favoured by writers, meditators and long-stay expats. Not a beach party town, not Bangkok.

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) has direct flights from most Asian and Middle-Eastern hubs and one-stop connections from Europe and North America. We collect you from the airport at no additional cost. Most Western passport holders receive a 60-day visa on arrival with no advance application needed. Full detail on safety, visas, climate and daily life is on the why Chiang Mai page.

The setting itself was chosen for what a settled green environment does to a depleted nervous system. This is not a wellness marketing claim; it is what a growing body of nature-and-health research describes when people spend uninterrupted time in quiet natural settings.

Transparent pricing, no per-session add-ons

Full pricing in THB, GBP, USD and EUR is published at /pricing.html with a live availability calendar. There are no per-session charges added on top. The residential fee covers accommodation, all meals, airport pickup, daily one-on-one therapy, all group activities, and the 12 weeks of online follow-up.

Payment structure is 50 percent deposit on booking and 50 percent on arrival. Longer stays of 21 or 28 days are quoted individually after evaluation. Outpatient sessions (in person in Chiang Mai or online globally) are billed at a flat per-session rate.

Compared to comparable private residential programmes in the US, UK or Switzerland, the total cost of a Chiang Mai-based intensive is meaningfully lower. That difference does not reflect a lower standard of care; it reflects the underlying cost of running a clinical operation in Thailand versus in high-cost Western capitals.

Retreat vs. weekly outpatient, at a glance

FactorResidential retreatWeekly outpatient therapy
Session frequencyDaily, on siteOnce weekly, in a clinic
EnvironmentRemoved from triggersYou return each day to the environment that shaped the pattern
Depth of processingSustained across days without loss of threadReset between weekly appointments

The two are not competitors; they are different tools for different phases. If weekly outpatient is currently working, keep it. The retreat is designed for the moment weekly work has plateaued and something more intensive is needed to unlock the next stretch of recovery.

Questions clients ask before booking

Do I need to be diagnosed with something specific to come?

No. The evaluation identifies what is going on and whether the retreat is the right fit. Many arrive without a formal diagnosis and leave with clearer language for what they have been dealing with, alongside the recovery work itself.

Can I stay on my current medication?

Yes, in most cases. We do not adjust or manage medication ourselves; that stays with your prescribing physician. If a medication review is clinically indicated during your stay, we will suggest it and coordinate with your provider at home.

Are sessions conducted in English?

Yes. Dirk is fluent in English, Dutch and French. Sessions in Dutch, French or Thai can be arranged by prior request.

What if I need to leave early or extend?

Both are handled without penalty when the reason is clinical or logistical. Early departure requires an integration session and an aftercare plan. Extension is often the more common request; we discuss it around day 10 if it looks warranted.

Is there online-only support if I cannot travel?

Yes. Private outpatient sessions with Dirk are available globally via our outpatient programme, and often serve as a first step for people considering the residential retreat later.
